Hypnotherapy is the therapy that uses hypnosis (an altered state of mind) with the utilisation of positive suggestion to bring about subconscious changes to our thoughts, feelings and behaviour.
Hypnosis is a method of inducing a trance or a dream-like state of deep relaxation. It is a natural state of mind, which is also an important part of everyday life. Whenever our mind wanders, daydreams or is focused on something, such as reading a book, driving a familiar route, watching a film, we are in a state of hypnosis.
Brain scans on people who are in hypnosis state show that brain wave activity moves from a Beta state to an Alpha state, and sometimes a Theta state. This is similar to the pattern of brain activity during meditation. This state allows the therapist to make appropriate suggestion to the subconscious mind, which acts as the controller of our thoughts, feelings and behaviour. Unwanted symptoms or problem behaviour then are dissolved or adjusted from the subconscious level.
